Rebecca says: I have had the privilege a few times now of joining with a fellowship where English is not their first language. On each occasion I have noticed something. Although I dont understand the lyrics and can only really hum along, or listen, there is something very special happening. Because I am not distracted by the lyrics I am able to appreciate the beauty of the worship happening all around me. And I use the word beauty deliberately. Yesterday I was struck by the thought that maybe this is how God sees worship. He isnt so interested in the words as the intimacy of the moment between Him, and his child.. In recent years I have become quite militant about the lyrics of worship songs as a lot of them have words that promote ideas of lack, crying out etc. Although I wouldnt actively seek to go back to singing some of the songs in question, I realised yesterday that this hard line stance has been hindering my relationship with God. Not on his end, of course, but on mine. Maybe God is not as hung up on words as we are. Just a thought.
