Recap of Day 1 : #TEDXAdventure The day was spent with #UglyIndian a community organizing project led by citizens to clean up commonly used public spaces that the government is not being engaged in and making it a safe space for citizens and run by themselves. Concept is simple, groups of Ugly Indian look a place, take a picture of it and then meetup in large scale numbers to Clean and posts pictures. Our Group had to clean and paint two subway stations which took roughly 3h of hard work. The team leaders advice was: it doesnt matter how much paint you use what matters is that it should look nice, results only. the more you shut up the more you are efficient. Comment 1 :Being the only non Indian in the group felt awesome as I was able to interact with hindi speaking people to get the job done. Comment 2 : we spent around 3h on the site painting and laughing, while getting ourselves dirty, we are in a huge avenue on average people spent around 10 min stuck on the cross roads, so every time people were staring, sometimes smiling but mostly looking in a dubious way... almost no interaction with us. Its like they wanted to ask who are you, what the hell are you doing or even thank you) but almost no one dared to speak. Comment3 : throughout the whole day, I have not seen a single person begging for MONEY or sleeping on the streets. This has been explained to me later by an architect running a co-working space that the city hasnt built its wealth based on strong industries that usually lay-off people but rather on services and IT and Electronics which created a soft-power economy. Comment 4: people work crazy shifts to accomodate the high demand of the indian IT centers and almost everyone I met was an Engineer This has been one of the most amazing experience Ive ever had so far and with most of the most kind and friendly people I HAVE EVER SEEN/BEEN. Comment 5: the speakers of this TEDX are amazing ... I have learnt today : That an organization crowdsources money to bail for peoples loans in the US sot that people dont take loans from banks). That Islamic design and arts can be a source for modern architecture and design using street arts. That roughly every year around 4 million indians enter University and around the same figure graduates and that the systems needs hacking to be more on the edge. That you can use comic books to raise awareness about Gender issues and launch a global trend towards a more empowering information systems That ONE MAN planted a Whole Forest by himself .......+......+ Its very difficult to not find someone with a sense of humour around here. More to come dhanyavad!!!
