Recap of last nights 3-1 loss to the Railroaders. (Reminder: Next HOME GAME is THIS THURSDAY….it will be THIRSTY THURSDAY!) If unearned runs didnt count, Fulton and Dubois County might still be in a scoreless tie. But the Railroaders pushed across three unearned runs to one for the Bombers, good enough for a 3-1 victory. The visitors from Fulton scored all they would need in the first inning. After Troy Squires led off with a single, Dayton Rausch advanced him with a swinging bunt. Bombers catcher Mitchell Doucette fielded the ball cleanly, but then threw it into center field, attempting to cut down the lead runner. Jeremiah Spring followed with a single to load the bases. Squires and Rausch then came in to score on a ground out and a wild pitch, respectively. The Bombers got one run back in the bottom of the third. With two down, leadoff hitter Caleb Lonkard reached base on a throwing error by Fulton shortstop Squires. Lonkard stole second, and came around to score on a Glenn Jones single. The Railroaders added an insurance run in the sixth. Reed Johnson led off with a single, advancing to second on an error by Dane Giesler. Tyler Hardin followed with another single of his own. Johnson then scored on a groundout off the bat of Tyler Marshall. Fernando Gonzalez started the game for the Railroaders, striking out six Bombers in six innings of work. He limited the Bombers to three hits, walking none to earn his first win. Daniel Goff relieved Gonzalez to start the seventh. He fanned three Bombers in two innings of work. After allowing a leadoff single to Lonkard in the bottom of the ninth, Goff gave way to Clay Chandler who retired all three batters he faced to merit his first save. Devin Williams (0-2) took the tough loss for the Bombers, allowing no earned runs on 7 hits and 2 walks in five-plus innings of work. There were no extra base hits by either side. Squires, Rausch, and Lance Mays had two singles each for the Railroaders. Jones had a pair of singles for the Bombers. Curiously, the final out came down to a battle of college teammates. With Lonkard at 2nd and the Bombers trailing 3-1 with two down in the bottom of the ninth, Dane Giesler stepped in to hit off of his Wabash Valley teammate Chandler. Giesler bounced the offering from Chandler right back to him to end the game.
