Receive from Baslldon journalist Chris Bamford. TORNADO TORRY TAKES TOWN BY STORM Depeche Mode and Alison Moyet aside, I cannot think of any local musician that would dare to return to Basildon after 12 years and hope play to a packed venue. Tornado Radio almost did just that on Saturday night at Colors. Only 24 tickets short of a full house, local boy Michael Torry fronted his new band Tornado Radio and played to an enthusiastic and appreciative audience, up dancing at the first riff of the bands opening number 20th Century Boy. And they didnt stop dancing and singing until the band played their 15 minute Get It On encore. This band is as far removed from a T Rex tribute band as you can get. There is no glam, apart from the pink feather boa draped around Torrys mic stand. No glitter under the eyes. No platform shoes. But what they lack in typical glam image, they make up for in their musical presentation of the songs that can match any typical T Rex tribute band. The 9 piece band played the songs in a way Bolan would have been proud. And I am sure he would have been smiling at Jack The Frog as he danced in the audience as the band blasted out one of Bolans lesser known tracks, New York City. And if Bolan played guitar as well as Gary Moore did on Saturday, he well may have got the respect he so deserved as a musician. The highlight for me was another lesser known track, Dandy In The Underworld. Beautiful sax and the rhythm section of drums, bass and keyboards held the music together with a raunchy, yet slow bluesy feel. And with The Cosmic Choir in perfect harmony, this was a moment to savour. I could finish with the old cliche I hope we dont have to wait another 12 years for this band to return to Basildon.... And I will !! Come back soon. We could all do with another Tornado in Basildon. Chris Bamford.
