Received a copy (of THE CATS MAW) as part of the Goodreads Giveaway program. Absolutely fantastic debut, poignant, touching and brimming with wisdom and surreal, haunting imagery. I loved the illustrations and thoroughly enjoyed the pacing of the novel. There is a sense of foreboding prevalent throughout, reminiscent of Gaimans work. Resonating with prophetic dreams, tantalizing mystery, feline companions and the relentless ache of finding oneself, the book captures the essence of growing up. Written in a style that is easy to grasp for younger readers, there are wonderful descriptions of the landscape, the characters and the dark atmosphere. I found myself tearing up at Billys predicament. His love for cats and his warmth, sensitivity, and compassion struck a chord. The story effortlessly weaves through several dreams and intriguing clues, compelling one to continue reading. Cat behaviour is captured magnificently. I found myself chuckling at the all too familiar cattiness of our feline friends. In the end, it is a book about growth, embracing oneself and accepting ones individuality. Powerful messages indeed.
