Received my new social security card in the mail today. I am proud to announce I am no longer a Staffe. I am officially Lesley Ann Hartling! My chains to the man whose name I carried for all these years, the constant reminder that I was different, the name that made me cringe when I had to explain why it wasnt like the rest of them, how although I had the only father I ever wanted I didnt have his name, my genetics were made from the man I only referred to as my sperm donor, the name my students lovingly called me for years that I secretly despised, the name I hated to spell over the phone, are finally broken. A lot of women struggle with losing the name they have carried their whole life but I.... I rejoice as I have dreamed of this day for the majority of my 28 years. Becoming a Hartling is so much more than just changing my name... it means I have my best friend for life and a wonderful, incredible family who has welcomed me with open arms. I feel like a life long weight has been lifted off my shoulders and for that I am forever grateful.
