Received news of the passing of a very good childhood friend. He was my next door neighbor while growing up in Navy Village, Fort Bonifacio. Living in duplex houses, we literally just had a wall between us. We went through childhood and teenage years together, experiencing things that helped us become the persons we are now. While we parted ways when he went off to attend Philippine Military Academy and later on become an officer in the Philippine Navy and I went the way of politics and public service, the bonds of friendship remain, due to the shared experience during our growing up years. Hence, the sense of loss is profound. He taught me how to drive and I got interested in tinkering with our car because of him. We spent hours just riding our bicycles around the village and eventually become adventurous enough to even go out of Fort Bonifacio. There were five of us in our little group back in Navy Village...Jong, Bo, Eric, Aldy and myself. Aldy has gone ahead of us in 2008 and now Eric has joined him in the next life. I remember how Aldy would tease him with our little private joke by saying Kumpareng Tash, what happened to you?. I can just imagine the two now joking with each other. You will be remembered, buddy. A snappy salute to Navy Captain Eric Cruz Ramos and a hearty Hooyah! May you rest in peace.
