Receiving some reports of a scam that originated on or before 2009 through email inboxes across the country... It began as a message from a fictitious soldier in Iraq pleading for assistance, My name is Capt. J Anthony and I am an American soldier serving in the Military of the 1st Armored Division in Iraq. As you know, we are being attacked by insurgents everyday and car bombings... Once the hook is set, the online scammer follows with a request relating to money that had been found in their quest for justice against insurgents. The scammer states that he wants to move this money to a reputable/sincere person for investment purposes and safe keeping in United States. This is the reason for contacting you. With his bait afloat, the scammer waits patiently for a phish to bite: When you receive this letter, kindly send me an e-mail signifying your interest including your most confidential telephone numbers and your full mailing address, Picture and Identification card, I will also send my to you. The scammer then concludes with: This is 100% risk-free. If you swallow that line and respond with your personal identity information, as requested, you are going to be reeled into his net of deceit! Be the one that got away! Dont give up your personal information to anyone who solicits you via email. Make sure that you only do business with reputable sources that can be trusted and verified through the Better Business Bureau (bbb.org/atlanta/). Do not respond to suspicious and unsolicited email. If you think you may be looking at a scam or something that promises an unbelievably large payoff, your instinct is probably right. Cyber criminals have become quite savvy in their attempts to lure people into clicking onto links or opening phony email attachments, as well. When the bait goes stale, they throw it out and try new material... Or, move to another phishing hole. If you believe that you have fallen victim to a similar scam, or have some email that appears suspicious in nature, contact our Crime Prevention and Community Service Unit at (770)531-6900.
