Recent BUKC Qualifiers: Cranfield Motorsport The British Universities Karting Championship Qualifiers is a race day where the teams compete to gain a place in the Main Championship. The top 26 teams of each of the two qualifier days will make up the 52-team Main Championship, and the remaining teams will enter the ‘Rookie Cup’. Cranfield Motorsport entered 3 teams into the 2014/2015 BUKC Qualifiers, which saw a total of 90 teams competing over the two days. The three teams were: A Team: - Anthony Bonnardel - Luke Roberts - Cris Pirro - Ash Willoughby B Team: - Stuart Kirk - Andrew Errington - Stephen Glass - Tristan Lagny C Team: - Damien Gaignard - Jean-Hubert Collès - Maxime Menneglier - Michael Lee The day started with each team taking part in 4 of the 5 practice/qualifying sessions, with each driver getting 20 minutes on track to familiarize themselves with the track and karts. Due to some on-track misunderstandings and possible marshal misjudgements, 2 of the Cranfield drivers (as well as multiple other teams) were given penalties, resulting in back of the grid starts. Never the less, the remaining starting positions ranged from 32nd (out of 36) to as high as 6th. After the first round of races (and post-race penalties applied to other teams), where each team raced in 4 out of 5, 25 minute sprint races, the results were as follows: A Team: 27th, 6th, 6th, 10th B Team: 13th, 23rd, 18th, 12th C Team: 31st, 29th, 23rd, 29th The afternoon session startedwell, but during the start of race 3, the rain arrived, and by lap 5 the track was fully wet. The regulations state that slick tires must always be used, which caused several teams to spin out, and the more experienced drivers were able to take advantage of the adverse conditions to gain track positions. By the end of the second session, the results were: A Team: 22nd, 6th, 3rd, 11th B Team: 9th, 17th, 17th, 23rd C Team: 31st, 21st, 18th, 27th Once the total results were added up, the best 6 of 8 results counted, and the over all classification showed as: A Team: 7th B Team: 21st C Team: 37th Overall, Cranfield Motorsport is extremely pleased with the results, which exceeded expectations. Never the less, the most important aspect of the day, was that every drivers left with a smile of their face, and thoroughly enjoyed the day.
