Recent Critical Advisories from Firewall Vendors As part of Networks First’s Managed Firewall service we will proactively monitor your organisation’s firewall to ensure that it offers high availability, monitoring key interface metrics as well as resources on the device(s) itself. The Managed Firewall service can include: Patch Management Vulnerability Scanning Firewall change verification process Security Information and Event Monitoring (SIEM) Compliance Reporting Additional Bespoke services as required Networks First will review security advisories from the Firewall vendor as part of the service and if necessary update the firewall to secure the network from the latest threat. Two recent examples of critical advisories that you may need to be aware of include: Industry reference: CVE-2013-0083 – Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Service Pack 1 Vulnerability Description An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists in Microsoft SharePoint Server. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could potentially issue SharePoint commands in the context of an administrative user on the site. The vulnerability is caused when Microsoft SharePoint Server does not properly handle malicious JavaScript elements contained within specially crafted site content, allowing the script to be displayed back to the user’s browser. For this vulnerability to be exploited, a user must visit a specially crafted page usually only available to SharePoint administrators. Mitigation: In order for the protection to be activated, Networks First can ensure your Security Gateway product is updated to the latest IPS update Industry reference: CVE-2013-0079 – Microsoft Visio Viewer Vulnerability Description A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Visio Viewer. The vulnerability is due to an error in the way Visio Viewer handles memory when parsing specially crafted Visio files. A remote attacker may exploit this vulnerability by enticing a target user to open a specially crafted Visio file with an affected version of Visio Viewer. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to take complete control of an affected system. Mitigation: In order for the protection to be activated, Networks First can ensure your Security Gateway product is updated to the latest IPS update In addition to ensuring IPS is up-to-date Networks First can provide your organisation with a Managed Firewall service. As part of the service we will backup your firewall environment. Networks First will work with you and the Firewall vendor to ensure the licence is valid and eligible for updates.
