Recent National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) show a steep decrease in poverty level in the period 2004-05 to 2011-12. Poverty level i.e. percentage of people living below poverty line of total population in India in 2004-05 was 37 percent and now in 2011-12 it has come down to 22%. Between 2005 and 2010 country witnessed annual growth rate of about 8.5 % and in the same period poverty level declined by almost 1.48 % anually. Now total no. of poor people in India is 26.89 crore against 40.73 crore in 2004-05. An interesting fact is this that rural poverty has declined faster than the urban one. In the same period rural poverty has reduced from 32.58 crore to 21.72 crore and the urban one from 8.15 crore to 5.17 crore. Given next Loksabha elections due in May 2014, NSSO data are going to be of immense help to the ruling United Progressive Alliance.
