Recent events surrounding the murders by non-southern police officers in Staten Is, New York (Garner), in Ferguson, MO (Brown), and Milwaukee, WI (Hamilton) proves how history repeats itself. Nonetheless, it is important to note that all power belongs to God and all authority and power is designated by God. According to the scriptures: Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same (Romans 13:1-3). More frequently, the discussion has been surfacing about how a parent should prepare their children to respond when they are confronted by a police officer. Well, I know no better way to respond to any authority in power than the word of God. The Word of God gives wisdom unlike any other. For instance, When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn (Proverb 29:2). Whether the just or the wicked are in authority, everyone who is confronted by an authority should subject themselves unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For the authorities are not a terror to good works, but for individuals who are lawbreakers, tough guys, respecters of no one, subject to wrong doings, and those who resist what is lawful, just and right. So then, would you want your child to not be afraid of the power? Then let them know to do that which is favorable, which appears that they are being respectful, so that they may earn the respect and praise of the very same authorities or powers who confront them.
