Recent science news on https://scienceisland.org/ 1 - Deep Ocean Current May Slow Due to Climate Change Far beneath the surface of the ocean, deep currents act as conveyer belts, channeling heat, carbon, oxygen and nutrients around the globe. A new study has found that recent climate change may be acting to slow down one of these conveyer belts, with potentially serious consequences for the future of the planet’s climate. 2 - MIT Engineers Design “Living Materials” Inspired by natural materials such as bone — a matrix of minerals and other substances, including living cells — engineers have coaxed bacterial cells to produce biofilms that can incorporate nonliving materials, such as gold nanoparticles and quantum dots. These “living materials” combine the advantages of live cells, which respond to their environment, produce complex biological molecules, and span multiple length scales, with the benefits of nonliving materials, which add functions such as conducting electricity or emitting light. 3 - NASA’s Spitzer Telescope Brings 360-Degree View of Galaxy to Our Fingertips Touring the Milky Way now is as easy as clicking a button with NASA’s new zoomable, 360-degree mosaic. The star-studded panorama of our galaxy is constructed from more than 2 million infrared snapshots taken over the past 10 years by NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, from the Galactic Legacy Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire project, or GLIMPSE. The GLIMPSE data are also part of a citizen science project, where users can help catalog bubbles and other objects in our Milky Way galaxy. The Milky Way project where we can help categorize star cluster, galaxies, and all the objects so far observed. milkywayproject.org/
