Recent task force sweep focused on those who committed crimes in W-B: The Luzerne County Sheriffs Office released new information on the fugitive sweep on Wednesday that picked up 20 individuals with outstanding warrants in Luzerne County. The Advanced Tactical Anti-Crime Unit - the newly formed task force comprised of local, state and federal law enforcement - conducted its second roundup, picking up individuals on warrants for everything from driving under the influence and retail theft to burglary and simple assault. Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis said this sweep was supposed to focus not just on arresting those from Wilkes-Barre, but those who committed crimes in Wilkes-Barre but live outside of the city. Out of the 20 people picked up, 12 of them were arrested in Wilkes-Barre, according to the sheriffs office. The task force, which was formed in November 2013 in response to violent crime in the city, worked with law enforcement in four other municipalities on the sweep: Hanover, Kingston, Nanticoke and Plymouth. Broken up into multiple teams, authorities raided locations throughout the central part of Luzerne County to take 21 individuals into custody - one who was immediately released because the warrant was no longer valid, Luzerne County Sheriff Brian Szumski said. The agency is comprised of members of the Wilkes-Barre Police Department and state police, as well as the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, the U.S. Marshal Service, the U.S. Attorneys Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Luzerne County Sheriffs Office, the Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement and Luzerne County detectives, according to the district attorneys press release.
