Recent years have seen the mass adoption of nanofibre layers in nonwoven fabrics for filter media. Such adoption has been made possible largely by improvements in the technology for manufacturing nanofibres for use in nonwovens on a commercial basis. Furthermore, nanofibres are seen as a key element in enabling companies to manufacture filters which help end users to comply with tighter environmental regulations. Ironically, however, there are fears over the potential toxicity of the nanofibres themselves, and such fears have meant that nanofibres are under scrutiny. In this report, Robin Anson discusses the market for nonwoven filter media and examines the different technologies for producing nanofibres -- including electrospinning and nozzle-less electrospinning, as well as alternatives to electrospinning. Moreover, he examines the use of nanofibres in automotive filters and battery applications, and also discusses the safety of nanofibres and nanoparticles. Source: TextilesIntelligence
