Recently (11/7), a group on Facebook (who also has its own website), posted an article about the MMR vaccine and autism. They were claiming proof that it causes autism. Please know that I have a tremendous amount of sympathy for those with autism and those affected by it. I did some investigating because I felt that the MMR vaccine had finally been proven innocent of the broad brush used to paint it culpable concerning autism. Here is a link discussing this point: forbes/sites/emilywillingham/2013/08/09/court-rulings-dont-confirm-autism-vaccine-link/ However, my feel is autism, much like many of the modern conditions that have a broad range of symptoms and occurs on a spectrum, can have a variety of ingredients that come together in different ways to create what we call the Autism spectrum. I dont believe it is any one single cause, although that would be a relief - we could fix that. A complex interaction of factors that are not identical person to person can give the same resulting set of symptoms. Do I believe the MMR vaccine, as well as others, can be the final ingredient in a particular childs soup that triggers the onset of symptoms? Yes, I do. But correlation and causation are not the same things. I have looked into the group: WhyDontYouTryThis, and found that they are consistently alarmist, conspiracy theorists. Some information they share has a factual basis. But I encourage everyone who reads their material to use a great big dollop of common sense and a big lump of salt.
