Recently Division of Cultural Resources staff completed an archeology processing technique called flotation. Flotation is used to gather smaller, organic material such a wood and seeds. A flotation tank is first filled with water and a mesh fabric is placed in the tank to collect heavy materials that sink. A well-documented soil sample is then placed into the tank and is gently agitated in the water to allow the lighter objects, like seeds, to float. As these objects float and flow outside the tank, they are caught in a mesh fabric inside a bucket. Once this is completed, the meshes are collected, labeled, and set out to dry. Everything that was collected is later studied, analyzed, cataloged and placed into the collections. (SS)
