Recently I asked a question on Fb. Who is Gaspar,Balthasar, & Melchior? It was a tough question. Here is something to quantify and qualify these wise men. Who are Gaspar, Balthasar, and Melchior. You were right they are the names of the three wise men. Interestingly you will not find this is in the bible except by mention of, Three Wise men. So if it is not in the Bible does that make its authenticity questionable? No not at all. To find who they were it would have required you to go outside of the Bible and look through history books, pictures, and other historical facts. History records many things about these men who the Bible refers to as wise men. There is more information than is worth writing down so I will attempt to condense it without overlooking the significance of it. First they did exist and they were considered wise men because they studied math, physics, and astronomy / astrology. They were the learned men of that era. They existed in The Roman, Babylonian, and Meade-Persian, empires. They were also a powerful political force in each of these kingdoms. They had a say so in who was going to be a king. These Magi were looked at as having wisdom and feared among those who were in power because they knew that when the Magi spoke you better take heed. They were murdered and their heads returned to the church. Their heads was stored at the Vatican until they were stolen by the Germans. This is where there skulls are on exhibit today. The significance of the wise men I believe is that the educated of the world who had probably the least amount of belief in God. The reason why is these men were always looking for ways through earthly means and knowledge to prove the existence of God. They also could have been seeking to dis prove authenticity of his authority and perhaps even to disconnect God from creation by proving holy phenomena, miracles, and God’s word to earthly evolution or natural processes. The word Magi is not found in Hebrew or Greek origin. It denotes a group of people and we get words like magic from Magi. In Mathew they were guided by a Holy Star. They see the star from hundreds of miles away. You know the rest of the story from there. Meanwhile angels are rejoicing in the heavens and being seen by shepherds on the hillside. Charging them and proclaiming boldly for all the faithful to see, “Unto you in the City of David in the town of Bethlehem a savior is born and he shall save his people.” We know that the scriptures say he came unto his own but they received him not, John 1:11. When Herod seen the Magi in his district he knew something big was happening and true to his rule he was terrified. He knew that the Magi spelled trouble for him. This only enraged him and he set out to know their business and why are they in his lowly kingdom. He knew what and who they were and the fact that they were in his kingdom was enough to have him fearful and concerned. We also know that history records population records and other data. So when Herod gave the order to execute all children under two years of age it was not a large number of babies, but one is cruel enough. In summary what can we glean from the three wise men who followed a star they seen in the sky; First Mathew 1:18 Records that the birth of Jesus was on the wise. In other words it was not happen-stance or karma or any other means. It was God’s plan since the days of Enoch; men began to call on the Lord in Genesis. Second; God is the author of history not us. History compliments and adds clarity and validity to Holy Scriptures. Third; the magi represented the educated of that time. Just like today it is very difficult to convince someone who is educated to believe in God much less Christ. Yet God sent them something they did understand or believe in. Fourth; they followed a star by faith which the scripture remind us that we all have been given a measure of faith; even atheist or agnostics. Romans 12:3. Fifth; Because of the Magi’s actions and historical facts, it reminds us that God speaks all languages. He knows how to draw men and women from near and afar to seek him. Me or anyone else is not out of his reach. Sixth; The Magi came to worship. If the elite educated of that era came by faith to acknowledge and bow before him. We as confessors of being washed in his blood should be worshipers, seekers, and followers. The travel or scheduling of our worship times should be prioritized and always urgent; here and now. The Star of Bethlehem only shined bright long enough for those who seek him to find him. In other words if you are looking in the stars do not let your star go out keep searching before it is too late. These Magi were educated men and yet in all their education they knew a King was being born. That should be the center piece of our Christmas. A newborn King has arrived and he has done great things. It is just and true to worship the King, and he declares his work even at this hour. Come all ye faithful and gather before the King of all kings, Jesus Christ our Lord. Prayer: Dear God I worship you and thank you for redemption. Help me to be a wise man that seeks, worships, and follows Jesus all the days of my life on earth.
