Recently, I had an extended online conversation with an overweight gentleman who claimed to be an experienced JKD instructor. While, most of my inquiries focused on some of his basic physical abilities, at first I did not reveal myself as a certified direct lineage instructor. I politely asked him key questions about his limitations without calling much attention to the size of his belly. He soon admitted to having a degree of difficulties performing certain physical actions due to his increasing weight. Obviously, Bruce Lee was greatly concerned about his total fitness & much of his JKD revolved around his being fit enough to perform at a high level, so I steered the conversation towards this mans awareness of this subject...he confessed to his inability to control his eating habits & slacking off on his exercise as he got older (40s). He also finally confessed to have never actually been formally certified to teach JKD yet he accepted students whenever possible, only charging them a small class fee. Would you refer to such an overweight & non-certified JKD instructor or would you rather pay for a more fit & legitimately certified teacher? Does an instructors knowledge base ever outweigh his physical fitness level?
