Recently I visited a pilgrim site and there made friendship with a young man. Very good man doing lot of social activities and he is also carryibg out tree plantation pgms across many villages of Haryana. Among several discussions he asked me: Is it not wrong that girls prefer to wear jeans and t shirts these days? Cant they wear traditional dress atleast coming to temple? What you say? I responded: Why you are wearing pants and shirts? Why not dhoti kurta? : This is comfortable. We wear dhoti in our villages and during functions. : Yes. Similarly, they also prefer comfort. : Ok. Then I will also try to change. We all should discard foreign clothes. : Why? : We should use only Indian products. Even Gandhiji advocated n promoted use of Svadeshi items. : See in which situation and time, Gandhiji promoted Svadeshi items and why it was done. It was a time when westerners exploited us, looted us. Now, entire world is a global village. There is nothing as svadeshi or videshi. What we need to look at is what is the impact the products and company make on the nature and people. If it is profit oriented, we should discard, if service oriented, promote. Coming to dress.. Yes. Always there is beauty in traditional dress. It is a part of our culture and we should not loose it. We should wear ethnic dress whenever possible atleast during functions like marriages and festivals. It adds colors to life. Let us accept everything from everywhere, but same time we only have to preserve and promote the beautiful colorful aspects of our culture may be it is dress, food, language, music, art, folk whatever. Most of the countries preserve it. But remember what matters is being good at heart.
