Recently I wrote a note about ‘How we become unholy?’ i.e. common,. I did mentioned that it was the children of Israel that wanted a law code and sacrifices like the nations around them. Let me show you a link of how the idea of the ark of the covenant came about. It is actually an Egyptian idea. Hence you would note that this happened after Israel built a golden calf. An Egyptian version of what they think is their God. So you see Israel’s idea was already distorted. It is here we see that God borrowed an idea from what was in their mind and used it to show He was like. As time went by, God began to eradicate this idea by showing people, the ark of the covenant is not their God, but the person who laid himself between the 2 angels in a tomb. By the way that’s the Hebrew meaning of the word ark. God used the ark to show that the body of Jesus between the 2 angels in his tomb was were the presence of God had actually dwelt. It was a shadow. Jesus is the reality. Hence dear friends, the 10 commandments was a shadow of righteousness. Jesus is the ultimate righteousness. The old covenant makes us common (unholy), Jesus makes us uncommon (holy). You do not need the laws which are written on stones, he has already written the law of Christ in your heart. The concept of sacrifice itself is the same. When God killed an animal to cloth Adam, Adam in his limited and fallen mind set thought to himself the only way to appease God was to bring a sacrifice. So both Cain and Abel brought sacrifice. Again God in his patience and grace allowed this idea to teach that it is God who will sacrifice for mankind and not the other way. So he chose Abel’s, simply because his was a pattern of what God would bring. It wasn’t that Abel’s was better, it was however effortless whilst Cain’s was full of effort. This constant desire to bring sacrifices was very much in the culture and practice during Abraham’s day. So God also had to eradicate this idea from Abraham. That’s why when Abraham wanted to kill Isaac, God stopped him and brought a lamb. Abraham’s idea of God changed from “Abraham will provide” to “The Lord will Provide” Jehovah Jireh. The full of this idea came in the expression of Jesus and what he said in Hebrews. See Hebrews 10 5 Hence, when He [Christ] entered into the world, He said, Sacrifices and offerings You have not desired, but instead You have made ready a body for Me [to offer]; 6 In burnt offerings and sin offerings You have taken no delight. 7 Then I said, Behold, here I am, coming to do Your will, O God—[to fulfill] what is written of Me in the volume of the Book. 8 When He said just before, You have neither desired, nor have You taken delight in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings—all of which are offered according to the Law— 9 He then went on to say, Behold, [here] I am, coming to do Your will. Thus He does away with and annuls the first (former) order [as a means of expiating sin] so that He might inaugurate and establish the second (latter) order. You see God meets you where you are and takes your convulsed and corrupted ideas of him and uses it to teach you who he is not and in patience show you who he is. You may not and will not fully comprehend who he is even when you die. You can’t. That’s why he has set eternity into the heart’s of men. (See Ecclesiastes 3). Yet in this limited passage of time, I count it a privilege to host the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. So you see the Law, the kings and the ark, they are but a shadow. Hebrews 10:1 For since the Law has merely a rude outline (foreshadowing) of the good things to come—instead of fully expressing those things—it can never by offering the same sacrifices continually year after year make perfect those who approach [its altars]. It’s very clear, the law and the things of the shadow “can never by offering the same sacrifices continually year after year make perfect those who approach [its altars].” That’s why when you go back to the Law as your righteousness and your means of keeping your salvation, you make yourself “common”.
