Recently, a friend recounted a true story of a few years ago. He is a very skilled insurance agent representing some very large commercial clients. A business owner that he represented called and explained that while successful, it just seemed like he was not maximizing profits as he had figured that he should. My friend told him he would visit him the next day. After work the two looked over records and documents and my friend noticed that something in fact did not add up. He told the business owner that he would like to talk with his secretary the next day, alone. The next day he met with the secretary and briefly explained why he was there and simply asked if there was anything that she needed to inform him. With a solemn look she pulled out a notepad from her purse and handed it over to my friend. On it was a long list noting date and amount that she had been stealing from the business owner over the past two years. It added up to approximately $325,000. He informed her that this was very serious and asked what she planned to do. She asked that the following day they meet together with her husband and her brother from an adjacent state. He agreed. After discussing this with the business owner they prepared to meet the next day with the agreed to parties and in fact, all met together. My friend explained to everyone present what they now knew to be true and asked what they intended to do about it. The brother of the woman calmly explained that he was a successful business owner also and that he was blessed with many years of financial success. He pulled out his checkbook and wrote a $325,000 check and handed it over to the business owner. My friend said that he acknowledged that as far as they were concerned this matter was over with the firing of the woman. No police, no charges, done. This story is extraordinary to me because most often the person caught in egregious acts are either prone to run and hide because they are scared or are so full of pride that they handle things in the manner that they decide because they will never allow someone else to dictate the terms of how the matter will be litigated. They would rather go down with the ship because of a manipulative and controlling spirit than relinquish the controls and have the ship virtually steer itself to a safe port. I learned a long time ago that when you put your dukes up, it is probably a safe bet that you’re going to get a bloody nose. Drop your fists and resist the temptation to be the person that you have always been and the fighting both within and with others ceases to win the day. “First pride, then the crash—the bigger the ego, the harder the fall.” Proverbs 16:18 (The Message) “Arrogance and pride—distinguishing marks in the wicked— are just plain sin.” Proverbs 21:4 (The Message) If there is one thing that you could change about your life and were not sure what it should be, you would be well served that it should be to rid yourself of a prideful spirit. Peace and blessings as you honor, serve, and walk with God in this journey called life.
