Recently a young man asked me how I got to where I am in my life. Here was my answer: 1. ) Be born in the year 1959 into a poor, working class family. 2. ) Have your family split up when you’re 6 years old. 3. ) Struggle for several years moving from rental apartment to rental apartment. 4. ) Get a new dad (step dad) who’s a real cool person to help out your family. 5. ) Work really hard in school. 6. ) Take the exam for a prestigious prep high school and get accepted. 7. ) Serendipitously discover you can sing rock & roll, and join up with a local garage band. 8. ) Continue taking every opportunity you can to develop your musical passion with further study. 9. ) Meet a tremendously talented, beautiful and courageous woman who believes in you and your musical aspirations, AND BE SMART ENOUGH TO MARRY HER! 10. ) Attend a music school, work like crazy, and receive your BFA in vocal performance (classical singing). 11. ) Move to one of the most awe-inspiring and competitive music meccas in the world, Nashville, and perform, record and compose as much as possible for many years. 12. ) Start up a business with very little capital in a highly competitive field and succeed at it. 13. ) Buy a house in a great neighborhood in 1993 in Nashville. 14. ) Get discouraged and disheartened time and time again over a period of many years, but keep believing and pursuing in any and every way. 15. ) In the meantime, earn advanced degrees in education, quit the music business here and there, but find a way back in. 16. ) Join a kick-ass Brit rock cover band and kick ass all over town, singing Zep, Beatles, Stones, et.al. 17. ) Rediscover your songwriting talent and compose a lot of songs. Put together an all original band (at age 50) and record a killer power pop album of all original material. Get some good reviews, pull off a highly successful Kickstarter campaign and a packed-house CD release party. 18. ) Repeat number 17 in some way, shape or form at age 55 in preparation for your next album. 19. ) STAY MARRIED, and celebrate your 30th wedding anniversary. 20. ) Never give up from here on out, even though some people deride you because they think you’re too old to be in the music business. Follow these 20 steps exactly and you’ll get to where I am.
