Recently at a party, I sat on the same table with a group of young Ugandans only male mostly likely between the age of 24yr and about 33yrs. They had very interesting discussions about relationships, work, politics and general life issues and to be honest, much as I was listening in I didnt participate till one of them said, he was tired of hassling in Uganda and wants to leave Uganda for the UK. In other words, if he left for the UK, he wouldnt hustle assuming life is easy there and friends seemed to agree with him. I have personally encountered many Ugandans that havent travelled and assume life is hustle free in the west or east Asia for that matter. I told those young guys that if life was hustling Some general info: Research has shown that in every society less than 4% of the population controls the majority of wealth and this is across board. When you go to any village say in Uganda, Rwanda or even China etc, the guys that own bicycles, shops, boda bodas, biggest land etc constitute only about 3% of the population. The same applies to cities Kampala, London, New York, Seattle, Beijing etc about 3% of the population will control the bigger wealth. Same applies to countries china, USA, uganda, rwanda etc. What then makes the UK for example a more powerful nation when compared to say Uganda? The difference comes from the population of the middle class. The middle class is composed of people who can afford their basic needs shelter, clothing, holidays, mortgages, electric bills, taxes, etc and through their taxes, their governments build good health care systems, education systems, infrastructure and also cater for the low class and by the way, the majority of those pay up to 60% of their incomes to their governments as taxes. A lot of the middle class have to have sometimes up to two to three jobs to be able to afford paying for their basics and by the way, this applies to people of all colors living in those countries. Many Ugandans out of ignorance assume that the richest Ugandan is poorer than the poorest English or American and yes, as much as its true that the richest English or American is richer than the richest Ugandan, the rich Ugandans are actually richer than the middle class in those countries and have a better quality of life as compared to theirs. Countries like the UK, America, Singapore etc have total control of their economies and make sure that no money leaves their economies just like that even with Aid. Before any of those countries spends say 100m dollars as aid to Uganda, they will negotiate deals with Uganda that will make their business people earn more than they give us. Do you guys think that the UK gives us more money through aid than Tullow oil earns from us let alone the so many other English companies operating in Uganda? Think again!! Uganda is a country that many people come to without anything and make capital to start businesses where they come from. This is a land of opportunities ask the Asians if you think am lying!! Our challenge as a people is living in bondage of over drinking, witch craft, careless spending etc. The bigger the dream one has, the bigger the sacrifice one has to apply!!
