Recently at the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia conference public history student Anthony Padovano participated in a workshop to restore historic gravestones. During the morning session at the gravestone conservation workshop at the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia conference in Huntington, warning signs of unsafe or deteriorating monuments were discussed as well as the proper tools and chemicals to use to clean gravestones under different circumstances. The group had a chance to get some hands-on experience, cleaning several 19th century monuments. In the afternoon, leveling and reconstruction techniques for broken or vulnerable gravestones were discussed and demonstrated. The group had another chance for hands-on work, reconstructing several small monuments.
