Recently been going through some old posts. This one by Greg Battle on Ambition vs. Leadership is a classic. | I’ve never been, nor will I ever aspire to being ambitious. As I see it, ambition is externalizing your raison d’être, allowing the forces of hubris, greed, vanity, and celebrity to dictate why you do things. Like cheating, there is an inherent cowardice to ambition. It’s an admission that I would rather see myself through the world’s eyes than reckon with designing my own self-image. While the ambitious are self-aggrandizing sycophants, leaders are self-aware visionaries. Leaders are vigilant and challenge conventional wisdom, complacency and the status quo with courage. They define the rules of their world and can communicate a clear map toward a foreseeable future. Woefully, I’ve seen too many people confuse ambition for leadership.
