Recently one of my friends was on a Goa visit. I had suggested him to take a private car rather then getting looted by the taxi drivers for obvious reasons. Upon his arrival at Sterling holiday resorts Porvorim, things were fine until evening when the so called taxi mafia kicked in. The manager of the resort Prakash gave a tip to the taxi operators outside the resort that a new tourist has arrived and is using a private car rather then a yellow taxi. Moments later the taxi guys started threatening him and asking him to return back the car so that he has to be dependent on the taxi services. They tried to make their own rules and even threatened to go to the cops, until I had to intervene and set the ball right. This incident has left a bad taste and image of Goa as he left the state. This only reinforces the fact that 1. Goa badly needs a private on call taxi service which will operate based on a pre decided per km fare rather then bullying tourist in such a manner with exorbitant threats and forcing someone to use taxis. This will be beneficial to both tourist and we Goans 2. The entry of Olacabs, a private enterprise offering taxi service, was stalled after the taxi association representing 2,000-odd tourist taxi owners had a violent agitation last year.Open economy and competition is good for Goans. If we can go and live, work and compete against British, Americans and Middle East, why should we stop competition in our state. Not fair. 3. The government ought to act and stop this goondagiri by the current independent taxi operators in the state. It is just not acceptable and tarnishing the states image as a tourist destination
