Recently, our dormitory has been affected by the viral disease called “Chickenpox”. Most of us (Post graduate students) are receiving calls from our fellow juniors regarding various queries of the disease and I think this is the only way to convey our messages to all of you rapidly. I guess, by this time, all of us might have already taken those “magic medicines” (more than one time a day) provided by the hostel reception without knowing but hoping that after taking these medicines you might be the lucky one and unlike others you will not suffer from this disease anymore. For this, we not only have to thank our overseas student’s office for providing us with these chinese medicines which are able to boost up our immunity for couples of days but also it’s the right time to make future plans by ourselves to maintain this immunity for a long time. WAYS OF MINIMISING INFECTION: • FREQUENT HANDWASHING, EATING MORE HYGIENIC FOODS, AND DRINKING PLENTY OF WATER. • EVERYTIME MAKE A HABIT OF LEAVING WHITE COATS (APRON) IN THE HOSPITAL DUTY ROOM. THOUGH CONVINIENT, AVOID WEARING IT ON THE ROADS, CANTEEN AND COFFEESHOP. IT MAY COST YOURS AND OTHER’S LIFE DUE TO SEVERE HOSPITAL ACQUIRED INFECTIONS. These might help in minimizing overall general infections. Some informations about chickenpox that might be helpful: • Chickenpox is a very contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It is self remitting disease which may need some symptomatic treatments. It causes a blister-like rash, itching, tiredness, headache and fever which might lasts about 5-10 days. • A person with chickenpox can spread the disease from 1 to 2 days before they get the rash and until all their blisters have formed scabs (crust). It usually takes about one week for all the blisters to become scabs. So, take a leave from class and also avoid going to the public places during this period (until scab is formed) in order to prevent transmission. Remember, chickenpox spreads in the air through coughing or sneezing. • Once a person has had the chickenpox infection it is unlikely he or she will get it again as for most people one infection is thought to confer lifelong immunity. However, for a few people, they can get chickenpox more than once, although this is not common. • How the Rash begins: Chickenpox usually begins as an itchy rash of red papules (small bumps) progressing to vesicles (blisters filled with pus) and finally forms scabs. The rash may first begin on the trunk, and then spread to face, chest, and to the rest of the body, including inside the mouth, eyelids, or genital area. • If you suffer from high grade fever then take plain paracetamol tablets only, DONOT USE any kind of Ibuprofen or NSAIDs. • Use calamine lotion which is available in every pharmacy near to the university. f Feel free to contact any postgraduate brothers or sisters in case of help.
