Recently, overwhelming evidence suggests that more guns make all people less safe, including their owners. The repeal of a Missouri law that required a permit to purchase a firearm was tied to a 16% increase in the annual murder rate. Another study shows that Americans have a 0.0000002% per capita risk of death during a home invasion - a situation many gun advocates cite as an important reason to get a gun. And between 1981 and 2010, for every 1% increase in gun ownership, there was a 1.1% increase in the firearm homicide rate.
