Recently pictures of the Margaret Pillsbury Hospital have been shown on here. I wish to add a post about the First hospital in Concord, NH. Before 1884 doctors would go to homes to treat patients...and perform needed surgery as well, The honors for the first hospital in Concord, and indeed the first general hospital in the state of NH, should be given to Dr. Shadrach C. Morrill. He secured pledges of money and helped form the hospital association. The first meeting for those who wished to come was held July 3, 1884. A committee was formed and they decided to lease the Bower house, which was located on the corners of Allison and South Main, for a period of two years as of October 1, 1884 with an option to purchase the home for six thousand dollars. On October 20, 1884 the hospital was opened. According to the first report made on January 27, 1885 nine patients had been admitted, four of which were for surgical procedures. There were three permanent employees listed, a matron, one nurse and a domestic. A medical staff was organized and the attending physicians were Granville P. Conn, Moses W. Russell, Ferdinand A. Stillings, Charles R. Walker, Shadrach C. Morrill and Albert H. Crosby. Assistants were George Cook, Herbert C. Cummings, Dennis E. Sullivan, Henry M. French. Albion P. Chesley and Thomas Hiland. Consulting Physicians were Jesse P. Bancroft, William G. Carter, Charles P. Gage, Edward E. Graves and Julia Wallace-Russell. During the first full year beginning January 1885 the city appropriated nine hundred dollars to pay for two free beds. This sum was increased to twelve hundred dollars in 1887. Many endowments were given and for several years John H. Lamprey gave free vegetables while Edward J. Knee met every Sunday and talked with patients in need.
