Recently several popular beaches in France and Spain introduced swimming bans after highly unusual sightings of Blue Sharks close to shore were recorded by tourists. Its rare for a Blue Shark to venture into shallow waters close to shore, instead preferring deeper oceanic waters and currents. This highly migratory species has a wide global distribution - including the Mediterranean and Northeast Atlantic - and is thought to be one of the most abundant and widespread large animals on the planet. However it is very heavily fished, predominantly by pelagic long-liners, yet no catch limits are in place anywhere in the world. Although its flesh is not highly valued, its fins are, meaning each year many millions of Blue Sharks are finned at sea and subsequently discarded. Visit nolimitsnofuture.org to find out more about the Shark Trusts No Limits? campaign calling for catch limits for Blue Sharks.
