Recently someone asked me why I charge what I do. Let me explain a little something. My session fee is $200. Digital files are sold for $10 a piece. This is more than reasonable, even LOW. I definitely understand the need to be frugal. Unfortunately photography is quite an expensive business to run, especially as a professional. My camera body and lenses cost several thousand dollars. This gear has to updated every 1-2 years. That means spending another few thousand dollars. I continually take workshops to improve my skills (an average of $1500 per workshop) and I pay nearly 30% of my income to self-employment taxes. My professional editing programs are also quite expensive, worth several hundred dollars. I pay hosting fees monthly for my website and my client galleries. I also spend 15+ hours post processing images so at the end of the day I make only minimum wage, if that. Not to mention that you are also hiring me for my TALENT, as an artist. It takes years to get there. Hours and hours away from my family. I can see how at first glance, my prices may seem expensive, but they are actually quite reasonable. This is how I support my family, so its not feasible for me to charge prices that dont reflect the time and expense Ive put in myself. Photography is like a tattoo. You get what you pay for.
