Recently, someone who is at least an instructor if not a professor, at a highly regarded institution of higher education was discussing with me the failings of the educational system. I pointed out that we have schools older than the country in the US, those seem to be working just fine. I also mentioned that when one looks at public school education as in a stable state of failure, its important to realize that it is in fact working as intended. Our public school system is not a failure, it is serving someone, just not the students of the schools. This person then said to me, isnt your argument is tautological? To which I immediately said, Yes, I love tautologies. Because my brain is somewhat defective, I was thinking about this discussion had a month ago while I was just washing my sink. It occurs to me that she neither understood my point, one must understand the purpose of a system if on wants to be effective in changing it, nor did she understand that I consider the base of any axiomatic system to be tautological. Obviously, the lack of understanding was due to the lack of explanation; it can be difficult to expand on ontological positions in what is presumably casual conversation.
