Recently theres this big news going around in the international photography community about a bride disputing over the photographers right to with-hold her image files until she finalized her album and pay for the album cover (which was not included in the package). The bride is a social media expert and has used her influence to tarnish the photographers reputation by bringing in the media onto her. This is a strong reminder to me as a professional photographer about how challenging it is these days to build a reputable photography business while ensuring everything is done with integrity, within legal means, and still keeping the fire of passion going in doing what I love. We try to make everything as clear as possible in the contracts between us and our clients, although often enough, there are matters which are never constant & changes a lot due to a third party outside of our company (vendors, suppliers, the government, kids arent behaving beyond control, etc.) so we always leave room for changes and make the best out of things when it happened. In the end of the day, we just want everyone to be happy. Hence, it is very important to practice clear communication as well as trust between client and photographer throughout the process of getting a portrait session done. Team work is also very important. I do not like to see myself as a slave and being obliged to do everything at my clients whims. I see myself as a partner and a friend to my clients, one who is trying very hard to ensure that their invaluable moments are captured for them to treasure for eternity. We are just trying to make an honest living to support our own families, while doing something which we love and are passionate about. :) So next time you are thinking of engaging a photographer to capture your memories, do remember to cover all grounds during your consultation, express your concerns and plan out your session together with your photographer much way in advance. Most importantly, be willing to accept that things change along the way so team work and communication is important to achieve a common ground for fairness for both parties. We give & take together.
