Recipe For Success: Joy, Purpose And Work - globaladvisors.biz/inc-feed/20140723/recipe-for-success-joy-purpose-and-work/ By Amy Alexander, FOR INVESTORS BUSINESS DAILY Whether youre deciding what to do with your life or developing a strategy for your companys next five years, written goals are always a good start. But you can do more. Add inspiration and discipline to get the best results. Remember these elements: Kick. Get into a career you enjoy, says George Cipolletti, CEO of orthopedic joint replacement manufacturer OMNIlife Science. Why? Passion stirs enthusiasm for the long haul. I come to work every day and I am doing what I love, he told IBD. When they talk to professional ballplayers and they say, I cant believe I am playing baseball; I would do it for free, I think you want to have that kind of feeling when you wake up in the morning. Quest. Look at the horizon. Check into new, advancing fields. As a ceramic science major in the late 1970s, Cipolletti found classmates who were gunning for careers in the semiconductor, appliance and construction industries. I was looking for something that was more directly involved in improving peoples lives, he said. Stretch. Cipolletti talked to medical students about their fields and heard about new joint replacement breakthroughs. It was a nascent industry at the time, he said. Cipolletti decided to be a pioneer. OMNIlife Science now makes knees and hips that surgeons use during joint replacement operations. Its next move: robotic navigation products for surgery. Purpose. Cipolletti spends a lot of time talking to surgeons. They offer the latest industry news, ideas and advice for polishing goods. Theres also affirmation. I was with a surgeon friend and he was doing rounds, he said. He introduced me to an elderly woman and said, This is George. He made your knee. She was so grateful. It was just an incredible feeling, to know that someone I had never met was looking at me and saying, Thank you so much. Huddle. Build a team of advisers to guide you with your dreams. Cipolletti gives that advice to his staff and his 10 children. There are smart people who will tell you what you need to do, he said. Grind it out. Strategist Patrick Stroh has worked with a variety of top business minds. Yet the principal adviser at consultancy Mercury Business Advisors and author of Business Strategy: Plan, Execute, Win! says he also learned about money growing up on a farm near Lake Aaron, Minn. His farmer father was a great entrepreneur, he adds. Chief among the lessons Dad taught Stroh: Dont balk at hard work. Its part of landing dreams. Show up. Every member of Strohs big family had a task on the farm. His had a stench: shoveling manure. But he got a lot out of it, he says. It boosted his character and drive to do more. Entry-level gigs raise your grit, he writes. Youll need that in any corner office role: Everyone should have to spend some time in a shoveling (poop)-type job. Gaze. Stroh says long-term plans are fuel for stellar achievement. Think in detail about where you want to be in a few years. And dont stick the scheme on a shelf. Good strategies stay active. To up short-term agility, he explained, companies today are doing a three-year look and a one-year focus. Commit. Crazy times? Plan anyway. Taking your life or business as it comes usually doesnt bring breakthrough results, Stroh instructed: If it starts to get down to, Were only going to look at the year ahead, thats not strategic anymore.
