Recognizing Wisdom The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “If you find a person who abstains from worldly possessions and avoids vain talk, then be close to him, for such a person is blessed with divine wisdom.” [Bayhaqi] The signs of a person’s wisdom are: 1. Aloofness from worldly possessions. A person who abstains from worldly possessions doesn’t see somebody’s house and yearn for one like it, or die for their clothes, or drool over their lifestyle; the perishable things of this world are not foremost in their minds nor the subject of their conversations. 2. Avoidance of vain talk. What is vain talk? It is reported from Ibn Abi Dunya that Umar (radi Allahu anhu) said: “Don’t engage yourselves in talking about people, for it is a misfortune; rather, make remembering Allah binding upon yourselves.” He (radi Allahu anhu) also said: “Make the remembering of Allah indispensable (for yourselves), for it is a cure and avoid talking about people, for it is an illness.” [The Lives of the Sahabah by Maulana Muhammad Yusuf Kandhlawi] The wise people whom we have been advised to maximize our closeness with, are to be recognized by their abstention (1) from worldly possessions and (2) from vain talk.
