Recommendations for the education of a high school teacher of English: dismantle the education departments and certification agencies: they are means of extorting money from would-be teachers and they teach/evaluate nothing. Require that a person who intends to teach English love their subject to such an extent that they can transmit their enthusiasm to their students; and demonstrate and ability to write and not merely talk about writing theory. Require them to take speech courses to learn out to communicate effectively. Require a two year mentoring period with an excellent teacher of long experience. I think this would solve a lot of problems and better prepare students for college (or life). It will never happen, at least not in my life time. Addendum: remove the power to regulate academic freedom from the grips of administrators and the PTA. Allow teachers to select their own books and give them sabbaticals to prevent burnout.
