Recommended books: two by Evan Eisenberg see evaneisenberg/ The Ecology of Eden covers with equally convincing authority ancient civilizations, the economics of the first automobiles and contemporary microbiology. All concerned with the human species’ history on planet earth. This author can kill a cliché at twenty paces. This is a thick volume of well documented, original thinking and beautifully written. Not the usual pessimism but neither does he bid for Intelligent Design: “. “If the mechanism of genetic transmission had been flawless from the outset, you and I would be archaebacteria. The reign of genes, Freeman Dyson has said, is like that of the Hapsburgs: despotism tempered by sloppiness.” Well worth reading, even just to dip into the parts of particular interest to any one reader. The author: “He has been a music columnist for The Nation, a synagogue cantor, and a gardener for the New York City parks department. Born in New York City, Eisenberg studied philosophy and classics at Harvard and Princeton and biology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.” His second influential book The Recording Angel, is a philosophical history of the means of recording music for private, personal listening. At the end, he gets back to ecology in a strange but rather inspirational manner.
