Record breakers? written by a chelsea fan Chelseas 3-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday marked a 23rd straight game without defeat and a milestone achievement for Jose Mourinho s team as they impressively equalled a club record. No Chelsea side has ever reached 24 games unbeaten, but Mourinhos class of 2014 now have the chance to make history at Newcastle this weekend. Across all competitions, we havent lost since April and have started the 2014/15 Premier League campaign in formidable fashion, outscoring every other club in the process. Notwithstanding our form in the Champions League which has seen us qualify as group winners with a game to spare, going 14 games unbeaten in the Premier League is an incredible feat in itself given the extremely competitive world of English football, where anyone can beat anyone else on any given day. But Chelseas quality was clear from the very first outing of the season against Burnley when goals from Diego Costa , Andre Schurrle and Branislav Ivanovic killed the game off with little more than half an hour played. Schurrle s goal in particular was a sight to behold, with the German finishing superbly after the most exquisite of assists from Cesc Fabregas . Two weeks later, Mourinho s men flexed their muscles again and hit Everton for six, despite the Toffees mean defensive reputation. In that game at Goodison Park, Costa scored inside the first minute. Getting ahead early and controlling games has often been a key trait this season. In September it was exemplified perfectly against Aston Villa when Oscars 7th minute strike immediately gave Chelsea the upper hand in what would later prove to be a comfortable 3-0 win. Crucially, the team have also performed well in tougher circumstances too, with wins against Arsenal and Liverpool both showing character and resilience to stifle potentially dangerous opponents. In the 2-0 win over the Gunners at the start of October, Arsene Wengers team werent allowed to muster even a single shot on target. The trip to Newcastle now offers the chance for this Chelsea team to go one better than any other has ever done and it seems the Blues are facing Alan Pardews Magpies at a good time. Saturdays opponents were making headlines of their own until a five-game winning streak came to an end recently, but have now lost and drawn their last two. Newcastle are also contending with several injury problems and at such a busy time of year Chelseas own strength in depth will become increasingly important over the coming weeks as rotation and rest becomes a necessity. The Blues have to contend with a crowded fixture list and seven more games across three competitions before the end of the month, but now is the time that having the quality squad Mourinho has assembled will really pay off. Beyond his tried and tested strongest XI, the boss has numerous top quality options throughout the squad - from the pace and finesse of Loic Remy, to the strength and experience of Didier Drogba, to the midfield assuredness of John Obi Mikel, as well as many more. Both Remy and Drogba found the net in Diego Costas absence on Wednesday and both could be involved again at St James Park. Kurt Zoumas also showed his potential after replacing Gary Cahill against Tottenham, leading Mourinho to praise his performance and suggest he is capable of stepping straight in at any time. Quite simply, things couldnt have gone much better for Chelsea after an exceptional start to the season and we are now in a very strong position to extend that unbeaten run to an unprecedented 24th game. Let’s hope we’re celebrating come 3pm on Saturday. By Jamie Spencer, Chelsea fan.
