Recovery – Part 2 – Replenishing Fuel (Part 7) Complex carbohydrates versus simple sugars Americans eat a LOT of sugar. Numerous studies show that sugar consumption in America is outrageously high. According to a recent report by the USDA, the average American consumes nearly 136 pounds of sugar every year; that’s over 27 5-pound bags of sugar per person, per year, which is over 42 teaspoons of sugar per person every day! This is an absurd amount of sugar, and most people don’t even know where they are getting it from because it is hidden in such things as breakfast cereals, snack bars, cookies, coffee drinks, sodas, salad dressings, snack foods, fast food, candy and fruit drinks. The bad news is that excess sugar consumption is implicated in most of the health disorders plaguing this country, including diabetes, heart disease, depression and other mood disorders, chronic fatigue and obesity. It also insures sub-optimal performance. However, simple carbohydrates eaten in the right amounts at the right time can dramatically increase muscle growth and repair. In addition, simple carbohydrates can be more effective than protein in preventing muscle breakdown when consumed at the right time. That time is during the Fuel Window (i.e., within 45 minutes of the end of an intense workout). Well discuss how and why in our next post.
