Rectifying the heart with the Qur’aan : All praise is due to Allaah. And may the Salaat and the Salaam be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and all of his companions. As for what follows: We have previously answered a question in the last meeting, wherein the questioner asked about the means of having a righteous heart. And we mentioned a number of means [1]. And the first one was… do you remember it? Reciting the Noble Qur’aan. This book, which Allaah, the Exalted and Most High, said about: {Had We sent down this Qur’aan on a mountain, you would surely have seen it humbling itself and rending asunder by the fear of Allaah.} [59:21] Then our Lord, the Majestic and Most High, said after that: {Such are the parables which We put forward to mankind that they may reflect.} [59:21] So the people of sound minds benefit from the parables. Look to the Statement of our Lord, the Majestic and Most High: {Had We sent down this Qur’aan on a mountain, you would surely have seen it humbling itself and rending asunder by the fear of Allaah.} [59:21] The firm and massive mountain; if this Qur’aan is sent down on it, it is torn and split asunder, out of fear of Allaah, the Blessed and Most High, out of glorification of Him and out of respect for this Revelation that was sent down. So how about the weak hearts? Verily, the heart that is not affected by the recitation of the Qur’aan or by listening to it, has no good in it! Because Allaah, the Majestic and Mighty, has praised the people of these righteous hearts with His Statement, the Majestic and Most High, while clarifying their situation with regards to this Mighty Qur’aan: {Allaah has sent down the best statement, a Book (this Qur’aan), its parts resembling each other in goodness and truth, oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they hear or recite it). Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allaah.} [39:23] So the one whose heart doesn’t soften to the Noble Qur’aan which comprises promises and threats, (verses) making afraid and threatening, and (verses about) the condition of the people of Paradise and the delights they are in, and that they are honoured in it and made to enjoy luxurious life between its flowering meadows, its shadows and its flowing rivers, then this one’s heart is harder than a stone. So upon him is to seek its cure. And upon him is to look for the causes which led him to this hardness. We seek refuge with Allaah from that! {Is one who is obedient to Allaah, prostrating himself or standing (in prayer) during the hours of the night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the Mercy of his Lord (like one who disbelieves)? Say: “Are those who know equal to those who know not?” It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allaah’s Signs and Verses).} [39:9] i.e. the men of living hearts and alert minds that understand this Qur’aan and know what it comprises. And this is why the Jinn – and they are the Jinn -, after hearing the Qur’aan, they immediately they returned saying: {They said: “Verily! We have heard a wonderful Recital (this Qur’aan)! It guides to the Right Path, and we have believed therein, and we shall never join (in worship) anything with our Lord (Allaah).”} [72: 1-2] And in (Surah) al-Ahqaaf: {..when they (the Jinn) stood in the presence thereof, they said: “Listen in silence!” And when it was finished, they turned to their people, as warners. They said: “O our people! Verily! We have heard a Book (this Qur’aan) sent down after Moosaa (Moses), confirming what came before it, it guides to the truth and to a Straight Path.”} [46:29-30] So the Jinn submitted to it. And Quraysh, with its eloquence and its strength in this language in which the Qur’aan was sent down, submitted to it. Allaah, the Exalted and Most High, challenged them with it (the Qur’aan), and they were not able to bring something like it, nor ten Surahs like it, nor one Surah like it. And even with this, they were still stubborn and said: {“It is only a human being who teaches him (the Prophet Muhammad).” The tongue of the man they refer to is foreign, while this (the Qur’aan) is a clear Arabic tongue.} [16:103] So seek guidance in this Book, which is the strong Rope of Allaah and the clear Light which, if you follow it, you are guided to the Straight Path. So seek it, contemplate it, recite it and repeat it! Seek its Tafseer (explanation) in order to know (and understand) what it contains! This is what is obligatory. For verily, if the servant recites (the Qur’aan) while he doesn’t understand what he’s reciting, he will not be affected! The only one who is affected (by it) is he who knows and understands the words that are addressed to him. So seek the knowledge of the Arabic language, in order to understand this Book and to know its miracles, its Tafseer and the tremendous meanings it comprises. This Book, which Allaah made the last of the Revealed Books and wherein Allaah gathered all of the good. {We have neglected nothing in the Book…} [6:38] {And no example or similitude do they bring (to oppose or to find fault in you or in this Qur’aan), but We reveal to you the truth (against that similitude or example), and the better explanation thereof.} [25:33] This is what Allaah, the Exalted and Most High, brings the hearts to life with. {And thus We have sent to you (O Muhammad) a Rooh (an Inspiration, and a Mercy) of Our Command. You knew not what is the Book, nor what is Faith. But We have made it (this Qur’aan) a light wherewith We guide whosoever of Our slaves We will. And verily, you (O Muhammad) are indeed guiding (mankind) to the Straight Path. The Path of Allaah, to Whom belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. Verily, all the matters at the end go to Allaah (for decision).}[42:52-53] So it (the Qur’aan) is a Rooh (soul), the Rooh of the hearts! Without it (the Qur’aan), there is no life for it (the hearts). And without it, there is no happiness for it. And without it, there is no tranquility for it. And without it, there is no sweetness of life in it. Allaah has made this Book the everlasting miracle for this Prophet – sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. And this is why the most knowledgeable of the people of it – after the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam – was Abu Bakr, may Allaah be pleased with him. When he (Abu Bakr) would recite it in his prayer, he could hardly restrain himself. He was a sad man, meaning: he had a lot of Khushoo’ (submissiveness, humility) and he cried a lot. Why? Because he is from the masters of this language. From the masters of the Arabic language, its men and its stallions! So he knew what this Book comprises. هو الكتاب الذي من قام يقرأه *** كأنما خاطب الرحمن بالكلمِ It is the Book which, whoever reads it, it is as if he is addressing the Most Merciful. And speaking about this topic, O brothers, takes a long time, and it is not possible for it to come to an end. For verily, the wonders of this Book never come to an end. And I advise myself and you to give attention to the concise books of Tafseer that are relied upon by Ahlus-Sunnah, which the Muslim – and especially the student of knowledge – is able to quickly go over and which don’t take much time from him. From these books is the book “Tafseer al-Baghawee”, may Allaah have mercy on him. And “Tafseer Ibn Katheer” and its abridgment which we have in front of us now. I advise you to read these two books a lot, in order to know what you are reciting and to know the meanings these great verses in this Blessed Book comprise. And I ask Allaah, the Exalted and Most High, to make us and you from the people of Allaah and those who are closest to him; those who are the people of the Noble Qur’aan. And may Allaah raise the rank of His servant and Messenger Muhammed, his family and all of his companions, grant them peace and bless them.
