Red Cross Solomon Islands floods update Sat 12 April 2014 Key statistics • 21 people dead, 2 are missing (revised down by Royal Solomon Islands Police Force) • There are approximately 9400 people in 21 welfare centres (NDMO figures) • Approximately 52,000 people have been affected – 12,000 in Honiara and 40,000 in Guadalcanal Water SIRCS has three Nomad water purification units. Two are set up at Tuvaruhu and one is operating in East Guadalcanal. As of Thursday 11 April we had purified 63,735 litres of water. This is being delivered to all evacuation centres in Honiara City and to two centres on the city boundary. Water distribution will continue to all evacuation centres in Honiara using five 3-tonne trucks. The third Nomad water purifier that arrived in country this week on a DFAT plane is operating in Nguvia, East Guadalcanal. As of yesterday it supplied clean drinking water to Nguvia, Correctional service, Nguvia School, Solrice, Roroni and Soitu. All three Nomad machines continue to operate and distribute clean drinking water to affected communities within Guadalcanal and Honiara City. NFIs Total NFIs (non-food items) distributed by Solomon Islands Red Cross so far in Honiara as part of the multi-agency coordinating committee (Red Cross, Oxfam, World Vision, Save the Children and others) • Jerry cans for families (SIRCS – 2220 total comprising 1195 20lt and 1025 10lt cans) • Blankets (SIRCS - 45) • Hygiene Kits for families (Oxfam – 554) • Sleeping mats (SIRCS - 122) • Family Kits (World Vision - 300) In addition SIRCS has distributed 1000 10-litre collapsible jerry cans to East Guadalcanal communities in parallel with water distribution. Registrations SIRCS completed registrations of displaced people in Honiara from 3-6 April and has passed all data to the Solomon Islands Government. Much of Guadalcanal remains inaccessible. Fifteen SIRCS staff and volunteers along with Provincial Disaster Operations Centre staff and other stakeholders are distributing water, water containers and carrying out initial damage assessments in Guadalcanal plains. Target areas are Ngalibiu to Balasuna (wards 18 to 21). In total 62 SIRCS volunteers and staff are carrying out work in Honiara and Guadalcanal, supported by Red Cross delegates from Fiji, France, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the IFRC.
