Red West mentioned that Elvis came to him one day in 1961 with the title and asked him to write a song around it. He said Elvis never told him the reason why and Red never asked figuring if Elvis wanted him to know the reason then he would tell him. Elvis never did. Red stated that he has always believed the title Elvis wrote was in reference to his mother and he crafted the lyrics around that belief.
