Red-crested Turaco:- The Red-crested Turaco (Tauraco - TopicsExpress

Red-crested Turaco:- The Red-crested Turaco (Tauraco erythrolophus) is a turaco, a group of African near-passerines. It is a frugivorous bird endemic to western Angola. Its call sounds somewhat like a jungle monkey. It utters deep barking call. Male and female’s calls are slightly different, with one higher-pitched than the other, probably coming from the female. They are highly vocal, and mainly at dawn. The turaco has copper containing pigments in their feathers. This means they are truly red and green, which differs from most birds whose feathers just reflect that colour. If you stir a glass of water with a red turaco feather, the water will turn pink! Diet: Red-crested Turaco feeds mainly on plant matter such as fruits, berries, figs, leaves and seeds, and also some proteins with termites and large snails. During the breeding season, the male performs courtship feeding to female and feeds her too. Displays usually start with the rainy season. The birds spread the wings in order to expose the crimson patches. The National Bird of Angola is the striking, endemic Red-crested Turaco. Interesting Fact is that this turaco is found only in a small area of Angola and the entire captive population is descended from birds brought into zoos in the 1960s.
