Redlands City Council approves Parklet Pilot Program By Sandra Emerson, Redlands Daily Facts POSTED: 07/02/14, 7:56 PM PDT | 0 COMMENTS REDLANDS >> After a few months of preparation, the city’s Parklet Pilot Program has been approved by the City Council. The one-year pilot program will allow some businesses to repurpose portions of streets into public open spaces, or parklets. “These are the type of innovative economic development activities that I think benefits our community and I’m glad to see we’re going to be able to do this so rapidly, so well done to those that were involved,” said Mayor Pro Tem Paul Foster. The City Council in March gave direction for a committee to be formed and the program to be developed. A committee of business owners and residents developed the Parklet Guidelines and Policies. Businesses interested in having a parklet would be responsible for the design, development and maintenance of their parklets. The city will need to approve the parklet design, issue a permit and conduct an inspection. The city will charge a $270 fee to cover the costs to process the applications and the inspections. Parklets are to be designed to be disassembled for city events, hours of operation must be posted and they will be located on streets with speed limits of 30 miles per hour. The pilot program aims to provide the public an area to sit and enjoy the surroundings where they could not before. The parklets will include amenities such as seating, bike parking and plants. Redlands businesses participating in the pilot program include a la Minute, Augie’s Coffee House and Olive Avenue Market. The pilot program will be reviewed by the City Council in March 2015. Councilman Jon Harrison thanked department directors and city staff for their help in establishing the program. “The committee did a great job of pulling together the basic materials and through your leadership and your staff’s strong commitment we were able to get this done by the timeline established,” he said. City staff has already conducted some preliminary site assessments of the proposed parklets, which could be established during the summer, Harrison said. redlandsdailyfacts/government-and-politics/20140702
