Redline Tip of the Day. Hopefully everyone knows by now that you should be using SFI 45.1 rated high density foam to pad your roll cage. If you are still using that old mushy pool noodle stuff, consider your safety - do some study to find out the truth if you must - and switch over. Problem; while the HD stuff is the best at absorbing impact, it is not what youd call ergonomically friendly. It is very stiff, doesnt like to bend, but crack and break, and the surface abrades pretty easily. Protection = A++. Ergonomics = F----!! Well, one thing you can do to keep it from cracking is to bevel the edges as shown here so that the zip ties do not cut into it on the edges and start it cracking. This also helps it in bending, and by contouring (narrowing or hour-glassing) areas that have to bend, you can get it around some fairly sharp corners without breaking. Looks much better than a bunch of clunky short straight pieces. Also, do use the wider 5/16 250lb cable ties, as they will not only crank down much harder, but the width wont cut in so bad. The stuff will still oxidize in the sun and suffer surface abrasion, but at least it will stay put for a lot longer.
