Reduced to the socioeconomic role of wage-earners, cheap and surplus labor, hewers of wood and carriers of water, the only other role or position left to Blacks by the white owners of the means of production and service organizations, is that of consumers. Through mass media manipulation and political progranda, the need to exhibit social status symbols and to compensate for feelings of inadequacy resulting from marginality as well as sociological necessity, Blacks too frequently over-consume and come to view consumption as an end in itself. -- Dr. Amos Wilson (Understanding Black Adolescent Male Violence).
