Reflecting on the horrific events of last Wednesday I am struggling with this whole concept of freedom of speech. We dont have total freedom of speech. We dont as a society accept language of discrimination for people with disabilities and we dont accept racist attitudes or language for example. So I am struggling to articulate exactly what we are striving to protect. Surely if we are speaking of protecting the right to cause offence, which the initial cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed most certainly did, then surely we must also protect the right for people to take offence as well - this of course does not negate or provide any excuse for the inhuman response of those who carried out the atrocity.
