Reflections About Nigeria. There was a civilization located far away in time as in place. The island city enjoyed lighting as well as warmth from the sun and it was made cold by breeze from the surrounding sea. Similar cities existed and the boundaries were ensured by the unyielding water. One day, a man died in one of the island cities and this had never happened in the citys life. This made the people to assemble for sober reflections. They realized that their lives were not endless, afterall. And that nothing was going to be permanent. They also reasoned further that even their sun shall burn out some day in the future, leaving them in the dark and without warmth. For this reason, the chief tasked them to proffer solutions first regarding the fate of their endangered sun. Someone was of the opinion that if they stopped other islands from sharing of their sun, she may live longer or never die off. Another man believed instead, that they should find a way to trap and save the energy from the sun for the future. Still, someone else believed that they would never have the risk if they stopped depending on the sun right the way. This way, the fellow reasoned, they will no longer fear for the suns ultimate passing. People should learn to live a cold life and do everything as under darkness. Then, the forth opinion came which held that all the positions should be implemented. The argument followed that every position so proposed had possible solutions. But a fifth position further interrupted the debate. Someone suggested that life was better for the city since there were no enemies. The person believed that the city had chances of making enemies either of men or of God in every proposal put forward so far. He does not want the troubles! He suggested instead, that all positions should be discarded and life returned to statusquo. God would take care of their every need including all their worries about the future. At last, it was impossible to persuade one opinion leader to accept one or another position which went contrary to his. Women were not allowed to talk and children are never counted. Everyone stuck to his ideas and the future never came to pass over them. It happened in my village some 30years ago when university students from the three units that make the community disagreed over everything including the agenda of that ill-fated meeting of the association. Then, i was a pupil in the primary school and that has remained as their last meeting. The students union no longer exists. Although, the youngsters who staged the rowdy and ignoble meeting are alive, the community remains divided beyond them as elders, mothers and children no longer worship, wash or wine together. This way of living ended since then. And here is the problem with the proposed national confab. Will the USs prediction about a Christian southern and Muslim northern Nigeria be a reality? Even late Ghadafi of troubled Lybia, an arch enemy to the Gods own country, could not help but agree with the Americans on this intelligence. As it is not in our character to submit our prides to secular reasoning, chances are that compromises would stay too far away while the confab holds. If this happens, the center would no longer hold and we all shall drift, albeit, reluctantly to our tents as once was the biblical Israel. Lord, may the labour of our heroes of the past not be in vain, amen.
