Regarding James K. Polk: When he handed the keys to the executive mansion over to Zachary Taylor on March, 4, 1849 he went home and was dead three months and eleven days later. Perhaps a second term would have done him a bit of good. Then again, perhaps not. His successor didnt fare too well either. President Taylor died a little over a year after becoming president - succumbing to food poisoning contracted at a Fourth of July Picnic. He was replaced by Vice President Millard Fillmore. I like typing the name Millard Fillmore.
